When Ramazan Mengi established the foundations of Mengi Yayin Turkey in 1964, little did he know that his family venture would evolve into the cornerstone of Turkish boat building. Built upon the foundations of family, passion, and craftsmanship, the Turkish shipyard is celebrating its 60th year with notable developments, partnerships, and plans to future-proof its craft.

The shipyard’s journey, with over 200 new-build boats to its name, began with young, skilled carpenters crafting wooden sailing boats up to 30 metres and traditional Turkish gullets. Over the decades, the shipyard has evolved and grown exponentially, seamlessly transitioning to steel hull and aluminium superstructure construction. Today, located in the Nuh Industrial Zone of Tuzla, the shipyard specialises in the 300-500GT range. The impressive setup of three hangers, spanning 40,000 square metres, allows for the simultaneous construction of up to four vessels.

While embracing modern approaches, it continues to stay true to its roots, such as Seleda, the 47.35-metre wooden gullet, delivered in 2021. Today, the sons and the third generation of the family bring a fresh perspective and expertise in naval architecture, engineering, and interior design to the shipyard.

Partnerships driving innovation

Collaboration and partnerships have been a driving force in their success while maintaining Turkish traditions. Responding to market demands and comprehensive research, Mengi Yay launched the Virtus line 10 years ago. The line was developed with European designers and engineers, including VYD Studio and Ginton Naval Architects.

Since 2019, the shipyard has delivered seven Virtus line motor yachts ranging from 39 to 47 metres. A milestone was reached with Hull number 100, Ancora, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic’s foundation. This yacht also marked the shipyard’s first motor yacht delivery to the US. The latest addition to the series is the 47-metre NB 115, slated for delivery in summer 2026. Continuing to answer industry demand, the shipyard has expanded the line to include 52.6-meter explorer yachts – Virtus XP – with two projects underway.
